Receiving an offer from a UK university is exciting, but it is not the end of the process. Before paying a deposit, Nigerian students should understand the offer conditions, what the payment secures, whether it is refundable and how the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Policies differ by institution, so there is no single deposit rule that applies to every university.
Read the offer letter carefully
Confirm the course title, start date, tuition fee, deposit amount and conditions you must meet. Some offers are conditional, meaning you still need to provide documents or meet academic or English-language requirements. Ask the university to clarify any condition you do not understand before making a payment.
Check the deposit and refund policy
Find the official tuition-fee and deposit policy for your course and intake. Check the circumstances in which a deposit may be refunded, the deadline for requesting a refund and any administrative deductions. Do not assume a deposit is refundable simply because you later decide not to travel.
Understand the CAS process
A CAS is an electronic record issued by a licensed student sponsor for the purpose of a Student visa application. It is not the visa itself and does not guarantee that a visa will be granted. Ask the university what it needs before issuing a CAS, including any outstanding academic documents, deposit or compliance checks.
Plan your visa documents separately
Review the current GOV.UK Student visa guidance, including the financial requirement and any other documents relevant to your circumstances. Your tuition deposit, available maintenance funds and the evidence accepted for a visa are separate issues. Keep proof of every payment and make sure the university’s records correctly show fees already paid.
Pay safely
- Use the payment instructions published by the university.
- Verify bank details if they change unexpectedly.
- Do not send money to an individual claiming to be an agent without independent confirmation.
- Save the receipt and reference number.
- Contact the university using contact details from its official website if a payment is not reflected.
Ask these questions before committing
When is the deposit due? What happens if a visa is refused? What evidence is required before a CAS can be issued? Can the start date be deferred, and what is the deadline? Get the answers in writing from the university’s official team and read the relevant policy yourself.
These checks cannot guarantee a visa outcome, but they can help you make a better-informed financial decision and avoid preventable confusion.
